The markets are not reacting to a quarterly earnings miss. They are reacting to the possibility that the very foundation of the global IT services industry may be changing.

It reflected a deeper anxiety now gripping investors worldwide: what happens if Artificial Intelligence (AI) starts doing the kind of work that built India’s multi-billion-dollar IT empire?

Thousands of engineers entered the workforce every year. Large campuses emerged across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Gurgaon. Companies mastered the art of delivering enterprise technology services through vast offshore teams.

And for decades, the model worked brilliantly.

Indian IT became synonymous with stability, predictable cash flows and global trust.

But generative AI is now challenging the very assumptions on which that system was built.

Why AI Feels Different This Time

The technology industry has experienced multiple automation waves before. From cloud computing to robotic process automation, every new technology initially triggered fears about job losses and disruption.

Yet generative AI feels fundamentally different.

Enterprises will continue needing partners capable of integrating AI into large-scale operational environments while ensuring compliance, data privacy and reliability. The nature of technology services may change, but the need for enterprise transformation is unlikely to disappear.

In fact, many Indian IT firms have already begun repositioning themselves aggressively around AI-led services.

Companies are:
