Yotta Data Services has commissioned and operationalised the National Data Center – North East Region (NDC NER) in Guwahati, marking what the company describes as a major step in strengthening India’s digital and data sovereignty infrastructure in the North-East.
The facility, built and operated by Yotta Data Services on behalf of the National Informatics Centre (NIC), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Yotta said the site is Assam’s largest data centre to date and the biggest in the North-East region by planned capacity.
Tier III sovereign facility with 8 MW design capacity
Located in Guwahati, the greenfield facility has been developed as a Tier III, IGBC Gold-rated national data centre designed to host mission-critical government workloads and digital governance platforms.
Built on a 4,000 square metre campus, the G+5 data centre currently supports about 200 racks with a 2 MW IT load. The infrastructure is designed to scale in phases to 8 MW total power capacity, positioning it as the largest data centre facility in the North-East by design capacity.
Yotta said the centre will support e-governance systems, citizen-facing digital services and inter-departmental platforms across the North-East, while improving data localization and regional resilience for government IT systems.
Built for high-risk seismic zone and difficult ground conditions
The company said the facility has been engineered for Seismic Zone V — India’s highest earthquake risk category — and constructed under challenging geotechnical conditions, including high groundwater levels and weak soil strata.
To address this, the project used deep load-bearing piles and reinforced substructure design to support critical infrastructure loads. The site also incorporates fire-rated external facades and hardened structural elements aimed at ensuring uninterrupted operations for government workloads.
Redundancy, security and green design features
According to Yotta, NDC NER has been designed with multi-layer redundancy across power, cooling, network and security layers. Key infrastructure elements include DG-backed power systems, redundant UPS and battery setups, dedicated network and security operations centres, and an integrated building management system.
The facility also includes on-site rooftop solar capacity of about 104 kW, energy-efficient cooling systems, and water treatment infrastructure as part of its green building certification requirements.
Focus on sovereign and AI-ready infrastructure
Yotta positioned the North-East data centre as part of a broader sovereign infrastructure push to keep sensitive government and citizen data hosted within India while supporting emerging AI and analytics workloads.
The company said the scalable architecture is designed to support next-generation use cases such as AI-enabled governance platforms and data-intensive public sector applications.
Yotta operates multiple hyperscale and edge data centre campuses across India, including sites in Navi Mumbai, Greater Noida and Gujarat, serving government, enterprise, cloud and AI workloads. The Guwahati facility extends that footprint into the North-East, a region that has historically had limited large-scale data centre capacity.
