Anthropic deepens India push with new Bengaluru office

Anthropic has opened a new office in Bengaluru and announced a series of partnerships across enterprise, education, agriculture and public-sector digital services, as the AI company deepens its push into what it describes as its second-largest global market for Claude.ai usage.

The company said India has emerged as one of the most technically active developer markets for its Claude models, with nearly half of local usage tied to computer science and mathematical workloads such as application development, system modernization and production software delivery.

The Bengaluru office is Anthropic’s second location in Asia after Tokyo and will be led by India Managing Director Irina Ghose. The company plans to expand local hiring across technical and go-to-market roles to support growing enterprise and startup adoption.

Anthropic said its India revenue run-rate has doubled since it announced its expansion plans in October 2025, with customers ranging from large enterprises to digital-native firms and early-stage startups.

Irina Ghose, Managing Director for India at Anthropic, said the country combines large-scale digital infrastructure with deep technical talent and strong public-interest technology programs, making it a key market for responsible AI deployment.

Enterprise and developer adoption expands

Anthropic highlighted rising enterprise and developer usage of its Claude and Claude Code models across India’s software and digital economy.

Air India is using Claude Code to help developers build and ship custom software faster and at lower cost as part of a broader agentic AI push across operations. Fintech firm CRED reported faster feature delivery and improved test coverage using Claude Code in its development workflows. IT services major Cognizant is deploying Claude to 350,000 employees globally to support legacy modernization, software development and enterprise AI adoption.

Among startups, Anthropic cited payment platform Razorpay, customer intelligence firm Enterpret and AI software builder Emergent as examples of companies building core products and internal tooling on Claude models. Emergent, the company said, reached $25 million in annual recurring revenue and two million users in under five months with a platform built entirely using Claude.

Focus on Indic languages and domain evaluations

Alongside commercial expansion, Anthropic is investing in improving model performance across major Indian languages. The company said it has been curating higher-quality training data across ten widely spoken Indic languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, to narrow the performance gap between English and non-English outputs.

Anthropic is working with organizations including Karya and the Collective Intelligence Project to build domain-specific evaluation benchmarks for tasks in areas such as agriculture and law. Nonprofits including Digital Green and Adalat AI are contributing domain expertise. The company plans to make these evaluation frameworks publicly available.

Education and social sector deployments

In education, Anthropic said instructional and learning use cases account for about 12% of Claude usage in India. It has partnered with nonprofit Pratham as a strategic AI lab collaborator. Pratham is piloting an AI-powered Anytime Testing Machine based on Claude across 20 schools and 1,500 students, with plans to scale to 100 schools by the end of 2026. The system is also being used in programs supporting women returning to education.

Anthropic is also collaborating with Central Square Foundation to support AI-enabled education tools for underserved communities through technical mentorship and API credits for developers building tutoring, teacher support and assessment solutions.

Public sector and digital infrastructure links

In the public sector, Anthropic is partnering with the EkStep Foundation to explore AI-enabled services built on India’s digital public infrastructure, with early focus on agriculture through the OpenAgriNet initiative. The goal is to expand access to expert agricultural knowledge at scale.

The company is also supporting Adalat AI in launching a national WhatsApp-based legal help service that uses Claude to provide case updates, translation, document summaries and interactive legal queries in Indian languages. The move targets long-standing access challenges in India’s court system, where millions of cases remain pending.

Anthropic also pointed to growing adoption of the open-source Model Context Protocol, an interoperability standard it created and recently contributed to the Linux Foundation. India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has launched an MCP server with support from Bharat Digital, enabling AI systems to query official national statistics. In the private sector, Swiggy is using MCP integrations to enable grocery ordering and restaurant reservations through Claude.

With its Bengaluru base now operational, Anthropic said it expects its India partnerships and deployments to expand further across regulated industries, social impact programs and developer ecosystems.
