Tata Communications and RailTel Corporation of India have entered into a strategic association to strengthen development of domestic digital infrastructure and international markets.
RailTel, a Navratna public sector undertaking, operates one of India’s largest neutral telecom networks, with more than 63,000 route km of optical fibre linking cities, towns, rural areas and over 6,000 railway stations. Over time, it has evolved into a key ICT partner for government departments, public sector units, banks, educational institutions and enterprises.
Under the agreement, RailTel’s nationwide fibre footprint and public sector reach will be combined with Tata Communications’ global digital fabric, spanning international networks, cloud, omnichannel communication platforms and cybersecurity services.
The companies said the association is designed to modernise network infrastructure, strengthen cyber protection, enhance customer experience and enable secure, sovereign cloud adoption for sensitive workloads. The partnership will also look to deploy AI-enabled platforms to improve visibility, reliability and operational performance across digital systems.
For RailTel, the collaboration is expected to expand its capabilities across data centres, managed services, cloud and cybersecurity. For Tata Communications, the association provides an opportunity to extend its digital infrastructure into critical public and enterprise environments at national scale, supporting government and large institutional workloads.
Ministries, state governments, PSUs and enterprises that rely on RailTel’s network are expected to benefit from faster connectivity, greater resilience and stronger data safeguards. Citizen-facing services such as railway Wi-Fi, public broadband, surveillance networks and digital governance platforms could also see improvements in performance and reliability as part of the infrastructure upgrade.
Sanjai Kumar, chairman and managing director of RailTel, said the partnership would reinforce the PSU’s foundational role in India’s connectivity landscape. “RailTel has always played a foundational role in connecting India. The collaboration with Tata Communications allows us to strengthen that role by bringing in advanced capabilities that will help our customers modernise their systems, improve resilience and serve citizens more effectively. Together, we are building a more dependable and future-ready digital backbone for the country,” Kumar said.
Sumeet Walia, chief sales and marketing officer at Tata Communications, framed the partnership in the context of India’s broader technology ambitions. “As India moves from digital adoption to AI leadership, our collaboration with RailTel is building the backbone for a secure, smart, and sovereign future. By delivering robust, AI-ready infrastructure from the center to the edge, we are empowering a resilient India. Together with RailTel we aim to innovate with confidence, ensuring the technology of tomorrow is a reality for every citizen today,” Walia said.
The tie-up comes as India accelerates efforts under its Digital India agenda to modernise public digital infrastructure, expand secure cloud adoption and deploy AI-driven services across sectors. By combining RailTel’s extensive physical network with Tata Communications’ global digital platforms, the two entities aim to create a more integrated and secure digital ecosystem capable of supporting both government transformation initiatives and enterprise digitisation at scale.
